FileMaker hosting – the modern solution for secure collaboration
What is Claris FileMaker?
Claris FileMaker is a powerful low-code platform for developing custom databases and business applications. If off-the-shelf software does not fit your workflows, FileMaker lets you build exactly the solution your business needs. FileMaker can be extended flexibly even without IT expertise and you can adapt it yourself at any time.
Its great advantage lies in its holistic approach: database, user interface, automation and interfaces all live in a single development environment. You define fields and relationships, design layouts by drag and drop and implement your company's business logic with built-in scripts. FileMaker offers all of this in one piece of software, without a complex multi-system architecture or different programming languages.
The finished application runs across platforms: on Mac and Windows, on iPhone and iPad and in the web browser.
FileMaker belongs to Claris, a subsidiary of Apple, and has been continuously developed for more than 30 years. Millions of users worldwide rely on FileMaker.
For businesses that want to digitalise their processes sustainably and efficiently while remaining independent, FileMaker is one of the most mature low-code platforms on the market.
With FileMaker, you can easily build tailor-made business software for exactly your requirements.
What makes FileMaker better?
FileMaker's strength lies in speed and flexibility. While conventional software projects take months, FileMaker often produces productive software within just a few days. Changes can be made continuously – your solution grows with your business.
Compared with off-the-shelf software, you retain full control over fields, processes, reports and user guidance. You are not dependent on a vendor's feature set, but design your workflows exactly to your requirements.
Compared with custom AI or web development, you save time and money because database, interface and logic already work together seamlessly. You work in one integrated solution rather than on many isolated islands. This combination of speed, independence and investment security is unique.
FileMaker enables fast and fully customisable database development without you having to be a programmer.
What does the walkingtoweb cloud offer?
The walkingtoweb FileMaker Cloud runs on our own infrastructure in Switzerland. All data – including the remotely stored backups – is stored solely and exclusively in Switzerland.
Technically, you get a private FileMaker Server:
- Either as a virtual Ubuntu Linux server
- or as a dedicated Mac mini / Mac Studio server
- The servers are fully set up to your specifications
- You can host up to 256 FileMaker databases
- No technical limit on access, users or traffic
- We back up all servers daily for 30 days, macOS servers for 60 days
- All backups are stored geo-redundantly (GVA)
- A secure Thawte SSL certificate with a subdomain is included
- FileMaker plug-ins, OttoFMS and Devin FM are easy to use
- The Mac mini / Mac Studio servers also make perfect AI servers
All walkingtoweb servers are operated in a high-security NTT data centre in Zurich, which runs 100% climate-neutrally on Swiss hydropower. Our backup data centre is located geo-redundantly in Geneva.
walkingtoweb offers ready-to-use, high-performance FileMaker servers, running either Linux or macOS.
What can I build with FileMaker?
With FileMaker, almost any data-driven business process can be mapped: CRM systems, order and project management, merchandise management, warehouse management, invoicing, time and resource planning or complete ERP solutions for businesses.
Thanks to freely designable interfaces, highly specialised applications are also possible: media databases, collection management for museums and galleries, special industry solutions, production and agency software, membership management or document archives.
FileMaker also acts as middleware – a central hub between people, devices and existing systems. You start with a single solution and, over the years, develop it into an integrated, tailor-made software landscape.
Together with the new built-in AI tools, external LLM models and AI platforms can also be integrated directly. In this setup, FileMaker is the conductor between your local data and the possibilities that AI tools offer.
FileMaker is the best low-code platform for modern, customised digitalisation without the headaches.
What interfaces does FileMaker offer?
FileMaker is deliberately designed to be open and integrates seamlessly into existing IT environments. A wide range of available interfaces extends every solution:
- REST-based FileMaker Data API
- OData for standardised data queries
- ODBC and JDBC for BI and office tools
- Direct connection to MySQL, PostgreSQL, MS SQL Server, Oracle
- WebDirect for browser-based use
- AI connectors to OpenAI, Cohere, Anthropic, Google Gemini
- Your own AI model server with your preferred local LLMs (macOS)
In addition, FileMaker communicates with virtually any web service: JSON processing, cURL requests to REST APIs, webhooks. This makes it possible to integrate web shops, newsletter systems, payment providers or accounting software.
FileMaker plug-ins extend the range of functions even further, for example for server-side email sending or other special functions. With OttoFMS, several servers can be synchronised and updates distributed easily. FileMaker thus becomes the central integration platform of your system landscape.
FileMaker is open, highly integrable and future-proof.

-
Are backups of the FileMaker servers created?
When setting up the server, we create several backup schedules for daily and weekly backups. One daily backup is automatically saved to an external backup system. These backups are also mirrored to a second Swiss data centre (GVA).
You can easily set up further backups yourself, e.g. hourly backups.
Tip: With the optional Backup Cloud, you can also store long-term backup archives with walkingtoweb.
-
How do I access the FileMaker Server backups?
Every customer with a virtual Claris FileMaker Server receives access to our customer portal. Here you can download the FileMaker backups created by FileMaker Server. The backups are kept for as long as storage space is available on FileMaker Server or as defined in the backup schedules. Please note that if storage space runs low, the oldest backups are always removed automatically.
Customers who have booked their own Nextcloud collaboration cloud with walkingtoweb can also have the Claris FileMaker backups integrated directly into their private cloud. Please contact our support team so that we can help you with the integration.
