Backup Cloud – protecting your data against loss

What is the Backup Cloud?

The Backup Cloud is your secure off-site data storage in Swiss data centres – a second, physically separate place to keep exactly the data that keeps your business running. Instead of storing backups only locally on a hard disk or NAS, they are transferred in encrypted form over the internet to our infrastructure. There they are protected against theft, fire, water damage or hardware failure.

The Backup Cloud works with versioning: in addition to the current state, earlier versions of your files are also stored. If something is accidentally overwritten or encrypted by ransomware, a clean point in time can easily be restored. Transfer and storage are encrypted end to end and, of course, GDPR/FADP compliant in Switzerland.

With the walkingtoweb Backup Cloud, you always have a copy stored separately from your local backups.

What makes the Backup Cloud better?

The difference lies in the interplay of location, technology and support. Your data is stored exclusively in Swiss data centres – no detours via servers outside the EU, no uncertainty about data protection. This allows you to meet GDPR and FADP requirements for your compliance without extra effort and to retain full data sovereignty at all times.

Unlike anonymous mass storage, the Backup Cloud relies on a proven, intelligent backup architecture: automated, incremental and space-saving backups, multiple versions and regular integrity checks. The result: maximum reliability when restoring.

And in an emergency, personal contact counts: at walkingtoweb you speak to real people who know your systems – no tickets stuck in call-centre queues. Expertise and proximity when it really matters.

The walkingtoweb Backup Cloud is the secure, FADP/GDPR-compliant solution for your automatic backups.

Why should we make backups?

Data loss is not a question of “if” but of “when”.
Faulty hardware, a careless click, ransomware or water damage in the server room – the causes are many and the consequences are often serious. Local backups are of little help if they are kept in the same place as the original.

The Backup Cloud provides a remedy: it creates the physically separate copy that every professional backup strategy requires. Even if your site fails completely, your data is safe and quickly available again – minimising downtime, protecting your company's reputation and ensuring business continuity.

Getting started is easy: once set up, backups run fully automatically in the background. You do not have to think about anything – and yet in an emergency you have everything to hand.

A cloud is not a backup, and neither is a NAS. With automatic backups, you are protected against emergencies.

What can you do with the Backup Cloud?

The Backup Cloud backs up more than just files or folders.
Whether complete servers, virtual machines, NAS systems, workstations or central databases – you decide what is backed up, when and how often. Daily, hourly or event-based runs and individual retention rules can be combined flexibly.

Thanks to versioning, you can go back to earlier states in a targeted way and restore a single file, a folder or an entire system – in a very short time if needed.

This makes it easy to implement the 3-2-1 rule perfectly: three copies of your data, on two different media, one of them off-site. The Backup Cloud reliably takes care of this external copy and fits seamlessly into your existing IT – from a single workstation to a complex corporate environment.

With the Backup Cloud, you can implement the 3-2-1 rule properly and also benefit from our geo-redundant storage.

What else can the Backup Cloud do?

Beyond pure backup, the Backup Cloud offers intelligent functions that make the difference in everyday use:

  • Incremental backups transfer only changed data and save bandwidth.

  • Deduplication recognises duplicate content and uses storage space efficiently.

  • Automatic checks ensure that all backups are complete and restorable.

This keeps backup windows short, costs predictable and restores guaranteed.

Protection against ransomware is also built in: thanks to immutable versions, you can always return to a clean point in time – instead of paying a ransom.
On request, you receive status messages and logs so that you always keep track without having to check constantly yourself.
In short: security that thinks ahead.

Comprehensive protection instead of individual manual backups – with automatic backups.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions

For further questions and clarification about the functions and possibilities of the Backup Cloud, please feel free to contact us.

  • Where is the data stored?

walkingtoweb operates exclusively its own infrastructure in a high-security Swiss data centre. In addition, we operate a backup data centre at a second location. All data is therefore stored solely and exclusively in Switzerland.
No work is outsourced – we also rely on our own staff for customer support.

walkingtoweb complies with all Swiss data protection regulations and therefore also with all data protection regulations applicable in the EU / DE / AT, including the GDPR / FADP. We have repeatedly passed several compliance audits by customers in the financial, medical and public administration sectors.

We hold the Swiss Hosting label, which verifies the highest standards of data security.

  • Which devices can I back up?

With the Backup Cloud client, you can easily back up files from your Windows, Mac and Linux computers.
If you use a Synology NAS, you can back it up directly to the Backup Cloud via Hyper Backup.
The backups of your Claris FileMaker databases can also be integrated directly with the walkingtoweb FileMaker Cloud as a long-term archive.

Further integrations are available on request.

  • What do versioning and retention mean?

Versioning means that a new version is saved whenever a document is changed.
Retention then describes how many of these versions are kept and for how long:

    Backup Cloud 100:
    Retention 3 days, 1 week, 1 month, 1 year
-> A changed document is kept once a day for the last 3 days.
-> The document is also available in a version from the last week.
-> In addition, one version from the last month and one version from the last year are kept.

    Backup Cloud 500:
    Retention 7 days, 2 weeks, 6 months, 1 year
-> A changed document is kept once a day for the last 7 days.
-> The document is also available in a version from the last two weeks.
-> In addition, one version from the last 6 months and one version from the last year are kept.

    Backup Cloud 1000:
    Retention 14 days, 4 weeks, 12 months, 1 year
-> A changed document is kept once a day for the last 14 days.
-> The document is also available in a version from the last four weeks.
-> In addition, one version from the last 12 months and one version from the last year are kept.

    Backup Cloud 1000+:
    Retention 21 days, 8 weeks, 24 months, 2–10 years
-> This is the retention we recommend.
-> With Backup Cloud 1000+, individual adjustments to your specifications are possible.

Please note that storage space is always calculated including all versions. If your documents change frequently, the storage requirement will be correspondingly higher.

  • Can FileMaker Server backups be archived automatically?

Yes, you can have the backups from the walkingtoweb FileMaker Cloud saved automatically to the Backup Cloud according to rules you define.
Backups are possible automatically, e.g. once a day / once a week or on the first day of each month. The backups are set up for you by our support team; please contact us if you have any questions.

  • Which backup strategy do you recommend?

For backups, there is the 3-2-1 rule, which is the easiest for end users to implement.
To ensure that no data is lost in the event of a fault / burglary / fire / flood / virus infection, you should have at least three copies of your data. It is important always to keep the production data physically separate from the backup data.

    The 3-2-1 rule in brief

    • One local copy of your data:
The easiest way to do this is with an external hard disk connected directly to the computer.

    • A second local copy of your data:
For this, a local Synology NAS can be set up, for example, to which all data is backed up via the network at another location in the office. This location should be lockable and accessible only to selected staff. If the NAS sits right next to your computer, there is no real security.

    • A third copy of your data at a geographically completely different location:
The third backup must always be off-site. We recommend using a cloud service for this, e.g. the walkingtoweb Backup Cloud.
