Data migration for Nextcloud, email & FileMaker

Comprehensive data migrations by walkingtoweb
Migrate
We take over your existing data with minimal downtime. As soon as we have access to your current server, we transfer documents, databases and configurations completely to our systems – and check the result before it goes live.
At the end, all you have to do is update the DNS records, and once the complete data migration is finished, your services are back online at the usual address.
Import
Data is often scattered: in directories that have grown over time, on old servers, in individual cloud accounts. It needs to be transferred to a new system – for example to Nextcloud.
We handle this import entirely for you. If necessary, we convert formats, remove duplicates and standardise naming so that the structure works from the very beginning.
Restructure
An import or migration is the best moment to question structures that have grown over time. Where things are filed twice, where permissions are unclear, where nobody understands the folder trees any more – at the latest during the transfer, it all becomes visible.
Drawing on decades of experience with a wide variety of data structures, we provide comprehensive advice and support the reorganisation step by step.
Better possibilities with your existing data
A move that brings more than a new server location
Many people see a change of provider as a tiresome chore: the same data, a different server, hopefully without downtime. Yet a data migration is the most effective lever you have to noticeably improve your processes. Because for the first time in years, someone looks at the entire data estate.
Consolidate rather than just move. In most companies, data is scattered: a file server in-house, a NAS at the branch office, private cloud accounts of individual employees, the mail archive with one provider and the database with another. Each island has its own permissions, its own backups – and its own gaps. We bring these data sets together: one platform, one login, one comprehensible permissions concept. Duplicates become apparent; whatever nobody needs any more is left behind.
Clean and without data loss. For us, migrating does not mean copying and hoping. We first record the current state, transfer a defined part as a test, check completeness and structure – and only then carry out the production move, usually overnight or at the weekend. Your source remains in place until everything has been verified. The final switchover takes place via the DNS records – downtime is kept to a minimum.
In Switzerland, under Swiss law. Afterwards, your data – and the backups too – is stored on our own servers in Swiss data centres. The FADP and GDPR apply – not the access claims of foreign authorities. Everything is operated climate-neutrally with Swiss hydropower.
By people who run these systems themselves. For more than two decades we have been hosting FileMaker, Linux servers, Nextcloud, mail systems and backup environments – and under the walkingtoyou umbrella we develop with them ourselves. That is why you do not talk to a ticketing system, but to people who know your environment.
How a move works with us
There is not just one way to move your data, but several. Which one is right depends on your data and on what you want to achieve with the switch. That is why we start with a conversation, not with technology.
1. Understanding what it is about. We clarify what data is involved, where it is stored today, how it is used and what goal you are pursuing with the move. The better we know the existing structures – data volumes, formats, permissions, dependencies on other systems – the more precise our proposal will be. Existing documentation and a look at the current system help us more than any estimate.
2. Checking feasibility and compatibility. We then check what can be taken over directly and where the hurdles lie: outdated formats, proprietary exports, version differences, special characters in file names, sharing and permission structures that cannot be mapped one to one. We clarify these questions in advance – not in the middle of the move. Where it makes sense, we carry out a test run with a representative sample.
3. Quotation and migration path. Only now do we prepare a comprehensive quotation, tailored to your data and to the path with the lowest risk for you. It sets out what will be transferred, what must be converted or cleaned up beforehand, how long it will take and what it will cost.
4. Agreeing the time window together. For the actual transfer, we jointly find a window that suits your operations. Off-peak hours, evenings, weekends or company holidays are normal for us – we fit in with you. We transfer large data sets in advance and only synchronise the changes on the cut-over date, so that the window remains as short as possible.
5. Switching over and acceptance. After the transfer, we check completeness and structure, switch over access and update the DNS records with you. Your previous system remains in place until you have approved the new state – only then is it switched off. On request, we brief your team so that from day one everyone knows where everything is.
