Nextcloud – the modern solution for secure collaboration
What is Nextcloud?
Nextcloud is an open platform for digital collaboration – your personal workspace in the cloud, with no third-party access to your data. Instead of storing files with American providers such as Dropbox or Google Drive, with Nextcloud you run your own private server.
Save, share and edit documents directly in the browser and manage contacts, calendars and tasks in one central place – all securely and in compliance with data protection law.
Developed in Europe as an open-source solution, Nextcloud offers full transparency: the source code is open and nothing happens behind the scenes.
This means you always remain in control of your data and access rights.
At walkingtoweb, your Nextcloud runs on optimised Swiss servers – securely hosted and FADP/GDPR compliant.
Convenience, security and digital sovereignty combined in one platform
Digital sovereignty for your data with your private Nextcloud.
What makes Nextcloud better?
The difference lies in the data – it belongs to you. While conventional cloud services distribute content worldwide and secure usage rights for themselves, with Nextcloud everything stays on your own server.
Nobody reads along, nobody sells information on.
Thanks to its open-source architecture, you are vendor-independent and can extend your cloud flexibly and adapt it to your own workflows. Instead of many separate solutions – storage here, chat there, calendar somewhere else – you get an integrated environment for all your tasks.
Your data remains in Swiss data centres, protected under the GDPR and FADP – without US owners, without risk. Security, independence and genuine data protection: that is what makes Nextcloud better than any standard storage service.
100% data protection compliant with secure Swiss hosting.
Why should we use Nextcloud?
Because it lets you regain control over your digital work. Contracts, customer data, emails, project documents – all of this belongs on a server that you control. With a private Nextcloud, you regain sovereignty over your data and meet all legal requirements. You can also conclude a valid Data Processing Agreement (DPA) with walkingtoweb.
The solution also makes economic sense: you replace several subscription services with one central platform. Your files are available on all devices, shares are created quickly, and teams work together from anywhere and in sync.
Nextcloud grows with you – from a small team to thousands of users, from the first folder to the terabyte range.
One central platform for your daily workflow instead of many separate solutions.
What can you do with Nextcloud?
Nextcloud can do far more than just store files. It synchronises documents across all devices (macOS, Windows, Linux, iOS, Android), offers targeted sharing with password protection and expiry dates, and organises your entire working day.
Use tasks (incl. Deck / Kanban), calendars, contacts and secure chat with video and audio conferencing. From the PLATINUM version onwards, this includes a dedicated TURN/STUN server for stable connections. With ONLYOFFICE or Collabora Online, teams edit Word, Excel or PowerPoint files simultaneously in the browser.
Via WebDAV, Nextcloud can be integrated into systems such as a Synology NAS. Nextcloud is a fully fledged, browser-based workplace for your daily workflow.
Nextcloud is the professional and flexible open-source cloud – instead of locked-down solutions with restrictions.
What else can Nextcloud do?
Nextcloud is endlessly extensible. Hundreds of extensions are available in the integrated App Store – from apps for time tracking and project management to solutions for forms and notes. You can install exactly the apps you really need.
Nextcloud also sets standards in terms of security:
two-factor authentication, individual user and group permissions and end-to-end encryption protect your sensitive data. Thanks to automatic versioning, you can easily restore even deleted or overwritten files.
You can seamlessly connect existing services such as Dropbox, Amazon S3, SharePoint or SFTP and migrate your data step by step. You can easily adapt the logo, colours and login page to your corporate design, and you can also use your own domain.
Easy integration into your existing workflows and flexible extension to suit your individual requirements.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
For further questions and clarification about the functions and possibilities of Nextcloud, please feel free to contact us.
Nextcloud provides comprehensive documentation here.
-
What is included in the walkingtoweb Nextcloud?
You get a complete private Nextcloud server with full admin access. You can use all Nextcloud apps (Files, Calendar, Tasks, Deck, Contacts, Mail client and many more) and choose your apps freely. The number of users is not limited either – only performance and storage space can limit usage.
-
Where is the data stored?
walkingtoweb operates exclusively its own infrastructure in a high-security Swiss data centre. In addition, we operate a backup data centre at a second location. All data is therefore stored solely and exclusively in Switzerland.
No work is outsourced – we also rely on our own staff for customer support.walkingtoweb complies with all Swiss data protection regulations and therefore also with all data protection regulations applicable in the EU / DE / AT, including the GDPR / FADP. We have repeatedly passed several compliance audits by customers in the financial, medical and public administration sectors.
We hold the Swiss Hosting label, which verifies the highest standards of data security.
-
How many users can I create?
Every Nextcloud is a private server. The number of users you can set up is limited only by the storage space and performance of the server.
For the number of users logged in at the same time, we recommend the following:
BRONZE up to 5 users
SILVER up to 10 users
GOLD up to 25 users
PLATINUM up to 50 usersFor more than 100 users, we also recommend a Nextcloud Enterprise licence, which gives you extended functions for administration and compliance.
-
Can I install my own Nextcloud apps?
Yes, you can install all available apps from the Nextcloud app directory. If you use the Nextcloud BRONZE or SILVER servers, we would not recommend using Office in the browser or Talk for video conferencing.
walkingtoweb cannot accept any liability for apps installed by the customer or their impact on system performance.
-
Can I adapt the corporate identity?
Yes, you can add your own logos and individual images for the login page, adjust colours and CSS styles, and edit the links to the legal notice and privacy policy.
-
Is access via WebDAV also possible?
Yes. You can connect any software that supports WebDAV to your Nextcloud.
This makes bidirectional synchronisation with a Synology NAS possible, for example. You can also share individual folders via WebDAV for external devices such as scanners.
Please note that when using 2FA you must always set up app-specific passwords. -
Can I integrate calendars, emails and contacts?
Yes. You can integrate any calendar that supports the CalDAV protocol and any email account that supports IMAP into Nextcloud.
-
Can I integrate emails?
Yes, you can receive and send emails directly in the browser. This gives you full integration with Nextcloud's documents, calendars and tasks.
As a secure email server, we recommend our email groupware with Kerio Connect.
-
Are backups of the Nextcloud servers created?
Yes, we back up every Nextcloud to two physically separate backup systems.
We apply the following backup rules:
Backup of all servers: 14 days, 1 x per day
Backup of all servers: 4 weeks, 1 x per week
Backup of all servers: 3 months, 1 x per monthIf you need a restore, please contact our support team.
Tip: Nextcloud offers clever built-in versioning. This allows you to access older and deleted versions directly from Nextcloud.
-
How does versioning work?
Nextcloud has an internal versioning system that lets you go back to previous versions.
The default settings are defined as follows:
For the first second, one version is kept
For the first 10 seconds, one version is kept every 2 seconds
For the first minute, one version is kept every 10 seconds
For the first hour, one version is kept every minute
For the first 24 hours, one version is kept every hour
For the first 30 days, one version is kept every day
After the first 30 days, one version is kept every weekThis versioning is only possible if at least 50% of the storage space is available.
If less storage space is available, fewer versions are kept and the retention period is shortened automatically. These settings can be adjusted by walkingtoweb support.
-
Can two-factor authentication (2FA) be enabled?
Yes, you can enable two-factor authentication (2FA) to protect your account against unauthorised access – and we recommend that you do. For external access, app-specific passwords can be issued.
-
Can I use my own domains?
Yes. Please let us know the domain (or subdomain) you would like to use when you place your order. When setting up Nextcloud, we will configure the requested domain accordingly. It can also be changed later – please contact our support team.
Unless otherwise specified, we set up your Nextcloud with a subdomain following this pattern: companyname.walkingtoweb.com. This subdomain is secured with our Thawte wildcard SSL certificate. If you would like to use your own domain or subdomain, we will set up a free SSL certificate from Let's Encrypt or, alternatively, a paid SSL certificate according to your specifications.
-
How long does provisioning take?
We install a fully operational Nextcloud server for you.
Setup takes approx. 1 working day – usually we are quicker. -
Can I choose which folders to synchronise?
Yes. The Nextcloud client lets you selectively enable folders and subfolders. This allows you to choose which data is synchronised.
-
What is the difference between user folders and group folders?
Every user has their own personal folder with the defined storage quota. These folders and files can be shared with other users (internal or external). If the user is removed, the user folder, including its documents, is also removed.
The group folder offers the same functions for sharing and working together as a team. The data is retained even if all members of the group are removed or deleted.
-
Can I let external people participate without an account?
Yes, you can send share links for downloading files and folders to external people without them needing a Nextcloud account. You should always protect these links with a password and an expiry date, although a link without a password is also possible.
In the same way as for downloads, you can also provide folders for uploads. -
Where is the storage space currently in use displayed?
In the browser, open the list of user accounts via the Administration menu at the top right.
The size currently used is shown here for each user. Storage limits can also be assigned per user in this list. The same function is available in the group folders section. The storage space shown in both menus always reflects only the current data. Documents in the trash bin and versions are not included. The total storage used is shown in the Administration / Settings / System menu.
-
Is full encryption possible?
The connection between the clients (app or browser and via WebDAV) is always secured with HTTPS. This means that the entire transport route for the data is always encrypted.
End-to-end encryption is also available. Here, the client encrypts the data locally and then uploads the encrypted data to the server. The data is therefore encrypted before transfer and can only be used by the client.
During the initial setup, a random password is generated in the local client, which must be stored SECURELY. If you lose this password, your data is irretrievably lost. After setup, you can create local folders and then mark them as encrypted in the Nextcloud client. All new data placed in these folders is then encrypted before being uploaded to the server. This allows you to store individual folders containing critical data in encrypted form.
This data can also be accessed in the browser; to do so, you must enter the previously saved password after logging in on the web.
Please note that encryption requires additional resources and that the storage space used is slightly larger. End-to-end encryption is also not available for shared folders – only for your own private folders.
